Pack for wind, water and changing activity levels rather than for constant extreme cold. Your excursion system is a moisture-wicking base layer, one or two adjustable midlayers, and a genuinely waterproof and windproof outer layer. Waterproof pants are the one item to treat as mandatory unless your operator explicitly supplies them.
Beyond the layers, the list that matters:
- Calf-high wool or synthetic socks, four to six pairs
- Waterproof insulated gloves plus a lighter dexterity pair
- Warm hat and a neck gaiter or buff
- Polarised sunglasses with a retainer, and SPF 50 plus lip balm
- A compact dry bag or protected daypack
- Comfortable closed-toe non-slip shoes for the ship
- A swimsuit, for the polar plunge or the hot tub
Before you buy boots or a parka, check your operator's pre-departure documents. Many companies provide insulated rubber boots, a waterproof parka, or both, and the arrangement may be a loan, a rental or a jacket you keep.
